Service members who are experiencing distress due to extended deployment may want to investigate the Servicemembers Civil Relief Act and the Military Homeowner’s Assistance Program (HAP).
The Servicemembers Civil Relief Act offers mortgage payment relief and foreclosure protection for active duty military personnel who had a mortgage obligation prior to enlistment or prior to being ordered to active duty. Member of the Army, Navy, Marine Corps, Air Force, Coast Guard, Public Health Service, National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, may be eligible per Servicemembers Civil Relief Act (SCRA) Guidelines.
Eligible servicemembers may benefit by HAP assistance in four ways. They program offers help with reimbursements for loss, short sale assistance and aid for those who default on their mortgages under certain circumstances. For short sales, eligible members may receive loss reimbursement that may be used to fully or partially pay off a lender in the case of a short sale shortfall. See Am I Eligible for HAP?
